In an era where many of the singers from the 60's, 70's, and 80's made their sound by racking their voices and are now croaking their way through nostalgia acts in Vegas, it's nice to hear Ann Wilson, who had a great set of pipes to start with and took care of them. Yeah, the song is overexposed and I expect to hear it on a linoleum commercial soon, but the audience seemed to like it... even the 3 geezers in the high buck seats.

So, about 3/4 of a lifetime ago, my wife said to me that the middle son, a personable, bright, intelligent, bookish, very likeable kid, would probably be better off for something physical he was accomplished at. The kid was small, slight, and put together like a stick figure made of popsicle sticks and scotch tape. Football and rugby were out. So, we bought him a bolt action, .22 rifle and I taught him to handle firearms and shoot. I'd taught his mother to shoot and handle firearms previously and it all worked out rather well. He learned how to be responsible in handling something that extended his personal power far beyond his stature and that he could feel confident about what he had and what he could do and it was actually a lot cooler to keep his mouth shut than running his mouth off. And a few years latter my wife was able to deal with pistol that the part time deputy sheriff left in the waiting room/kids play area of the medical facility she ran.
So this Christmas, my son said to me, "Does the NRA realize that they are not helping? That they are like PETA with their totally out beyond where the buses run position?"
I have to say that the thought of a pair of George Zimmerman armed to the teeth volunteers showing up at the opposite sides of the schoolyard at the same time makes my blood run cold...

Try Preventative Detention And Forced Medication For The Suspicion Of Intent Or Capacity To Do Harm. I'd Just As Soon These Were The Last Murders Of ANY Kind. Two REAL Important Looks At Investing... This has been a so so year for my 401. My benchmark is the default (Balanced Pooled) fund which is a fixed mix of stocks and bonds and I'm behind it this year. I can live with that. When things got risky, I got safe. I still am way underweight stocks even though I see risk as moderate. That costs performance. Still... 6% and safety ain't bad. And I've got an 18%, an 11% and a 9% year in the last 9 years to see what I can do in a good market. Articles like these help me keep my head on straight.

Ya get to my age, you get used to losing the old timers. You become an old timer and you get used to losing your contemporaries; I went to my first High School reunion this year and I was surrounded by geezers, and not as many as there shoulda been. But when you lose one of the younger guys, it ain't expected and it stings. RIP Redbone.

So I'm boppin' home Thursday Afternoon and I blow by a semi flatbed w/ handful of stationary generators on it and the tractor is a plain white wit the FEMA emblem onnit. Four miles down the road in the same direction is the ex Moffet Naval Air Station, now NASA/quasi government/Airforce One, Orion P3, etc base.
Betcha the next day there were a bunch more generators on the East Coast and fewer on the West Coast. Whadda YOU think about throwing natural disaster responsibilities on to each individual state?

1980 to 2000 and 2000 to now. What I do with my 401 is situation dependent. This is an active management period for my self managed plan. When the time is right, I got no problem sitting still and getting rewarded big time for it... But now ain't that time. Now is more of a make hay while the sun shines cuz it ain't gonna last and don't be so stupid as to stand out inna rain and get wet, cuz ya can always lose what you've made being asleep at the switch... I went to see Billy Cobham back inna 70's and Larry Coryell was the opening act. I expected to see his "11th House" electric band. Instead, he walked out onstage carrying an acoustic guitar in front of a boisterous crowd wired for an electric WFO evening. The sound set up was AWESOME and so was Larry. His opening number got a 2 minute standing O and he left us all hammered flat. Here he is from about then, and I believe he has some help with him....

My kids spent 2 years plus in England and through them I met one of their acquaintances who was also a racer like I was at the time. We sat down with a beer each and were watching some IOM footage and I hear him going..."paint...tree..tree...lightpost.....house..... down two..left..left.. down two..hard right..up two..bridge..jump..land..intersection... under his breath. He had run the race a time or two and had once gone offroading at over 100MPH, broken a wrist in a tank slapper, got it back on the pavement and finished the race.
I was never even close to that crazy.

I'm all bonds now inna 401. I will be all stocks at some point. A day, a week, a year or seven from now. The thing is that the right balance between premature and too late will end up making the maximum amount of money in the 401. I'm comfortable with my concerns right now. Of course I was comfortable with them at the generational(?)low in 2009 and I left a lot of money on the table staying too comfortable worried about losing money. I think I'll allocate a little more time toward being uncomfortable.
